Netflix is infusing The Altruists, a limited show about FTX’s ups and downs, with one of crypto’s biggest scandals. The show centers around the two key players who helped bring the exchange down, Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, and will air on Nov. 19.
Netflix Turns the FTX Collapse Into a Crypto Drama
Netflix characterized the series as a tale of “love scorned prodigies” of the FTX scandal. Anthony Boyle will portray Bankman-Fried, who was the previous head of one of the trading arms of FTX, Alameda Research, and Julia Garner will portray Ellison herself.
The trailer tells the pair’s tale in the context of risky behavior, relationships, and research in the philosophy behind actions in the crypto empire.
All in. Every time. Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle star as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried in this limited series about the love scorned prodigies behind the FTX scandal.

The common theme that keeps coming up in the preview message is that going “all in” again might be the best mathematical play. It’s a theme echoing the high-risk trading environment that surrounded FTX and Alameda prior to the exchange’s collapse in 2022.
Caroline Ellison Takes Center Stage
Instead of being merely a foil to Bankman-Fried’s story, Ellison seems to find himself in the thick of things on the series.
The trailer features conversations and discussion of lying for what is perceived to be a good reason, and ties the drama to the notion of effective altruism that was common in the hallways around FTX’s leadership.
Ellison went on to play a pivotal role in Bankman-Fried’s case at trial when he pled guilty to charges stemming from the collapse. Her willingness helped prosecutors secure detailed evidence regarding the operation of Alameda and FTX prior to when customer funds were lost and the exchange went bankrupt.

SBF’s Conviction Remains Central to the FTX Story
In 2023, the man was convicted of seven felony charges of fraud and conspiracy. The case has gone on to become one of the biggest, most demoralizing crypto crimes of all time and he ended up spending 25 years behind bars.
The platform FTX was once one of the world’s biggest crypto exchanges until it unraveled suddenly and resulted in devastating losses across the sector. The scandal also marked a pivotal moment in crypto regulation, exchange transparency and the management of their customers’ assets.
‘The Altruists’ Arrives November 19
In the format of “Netflix Originals,” the FTX saga will be released as an eight-part mini-series instead of a documentary. That resulted in the production devoting more time to the friendship and collegiality of Bankman-Fried and Ellison and the financial issues which led FTX to its demise.
The series will premiere worldwide on November 19, placing the FTX scandal once again back on the front page, six months after the exchange crashed almost four years ago.
